I wish we were not called Dietitians! I do not diet; I eat right. The word, “diet”, makes my insides cringe. Listen, I know what everyone tells you. The internet, doctors and even family members think they know the solution to weight loss. With miracle claims resulting in fast weight loss, supporting strict, low calorie diets to high fat diets. It is tough not to believe everything you read!

My solution? I suggest you skip the diet and just eat right. Diets in the short term; yes, they work! But, in the long term, you are MORE LIKELY to gain the weight back ( plus some additional pounds ). With a few exceptions. A couple healthy lifestyle promoters I can stand behind are the Mediterranean and DASH.

Five Reasons to Stop Your Diet.

D – Damage. They damage your chance of having a good mentality and relationship with food. I love food. I love whole foods. I love Nutella, peanut butter and chocolate. I will have them when I want them. I will enjoy them, in moderation , with some whole foods I also love. I will snack on peanut butter and apples, Nutella with some red, juicy strawberries and chocolate mixed all up in my smoothie! Dietitians promote positive thoughts about food. Processed food is ok in moderation, just balance it out with some whole food. All types of food, after all, it is a huge part of our culture, religion, tradition and it brings us together!
I – imaginary. Imagine that you will lose 20 pounds in 30 days! Fast, starvation-related weight loss is not healthy. Work toward steady weight loss , 1-2 pounds a week. Give your body a better chance of keeping the weight off in the long-run. Imagine – an ideal world, where everyone eats healthy ALWAYS. This is not the world we live in. Do you love to eat out and socialize? Who doesn’t? I enjoy indulging in a cheesy pizza and BBQ wings every now and then. It IS POSSIBLE to maintain a balanced , healthy lifestyle. Make small changes and let your body appreciate them.

E – Eliminate. Oy vey – Eliminating whole food groups and nutrients is not the way to go. If you are trying to balance life and health, you have to be able to live a little and give a little. Eliminating foods can isolate you from enjoying a meal socially, with your friends. Restrictive diets actually trigger a response in our bodies; aka the starvation response. We begin to store fat, burn fewer calories and our minds respond by obsessing over food. It’s a real thing! And it negatively affects your metabolism – causing weight gain when you begin to eat regularly again.

T – Temporary. Do you know anyone who has been on the Atkins or Paleo diet their entire lives?! You are more likely to gain the weight back in the future. Keep your body happy and invest in small goals and steps. Let’s not get too unrealistic. When you are finished with your fad diet, you’re more likely to binge-eat your favorite, unhealthy snacks, once the diet is over. There is no stop date for healthy eating – It’s a lifelong investment.
